Mario Maffei's family, owner of La Montagna Verde Agriturismo since 1995, has for many years been engaged in a process of enhancement and protection of the beautiful and ancient village of Apella and its Tower, seat of the Agriturismo, in Lunigiana, in the upper Tuscany, for the development of sustainable tourism and organic agriculture, to maintain the surrounding agricultural landscape. The farm was founded in 1995 with the inauguration of the newly renovated rooms of the ancient tower, located between the ancient medieval villages of Apella and Taponecco, in Lunigiana, in upper Tuscany. It was thanks to the idea and work of Mario, the owner of the farm (who played in these places since he was a child) that the structure was returned to its former glory, dominating the valley of the Taponecco and Taverone streams and the centuries-old chestnut groves and pastures of the National Park of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. Immediately after the war, Apella had suffered a significant abandonment and only towards the end of the 1980s did Mario Maffei decide to create an agricultural cooperative, involving the few inhabitants of Apella and Taponecco, with the primary purpose of managing the harvest of the fruits of the undergrowth. and chestnuts, which have always been produced in abundance in the beautiful chestnut-gardens at risk of abandonment. This has allowed the survival of a local economy, mainly linked to the fruit chestnut grove and the porcino, and to the renewed interest in this territory and its rurality, which has undergone a decisive boost with the birth of the agritourism and its agricultural cooperative. , of which Mario's children, Barbara and Luca Maffei are also members today. And it is to them, and to their youthful enthusiasm and passion, that we owe a renewed impulse to the development, in a sustainable way, of the company, which today also has the merit of having recovered part of the village of Apella, saving it from an inexorable decline and abandonment.
